Understanding Sexually Transmitted Infections

Aims

The programme aims to increase participants knowledge and understanding of the sensitive issues of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), prevalence rate, biology, symptoms and treatments currently available.

It also aims to explore the government’s sexual health strategy and consider possible prevention strategies


Learning objectives
On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Explore statistical data relating to STIs and their prevalence in the UK
  • Understand the biology of bacteria, viruses and fungi including growth and reproduction
  • Understand issues surrounding STIs including transmission routes, symptoms and possible treatments
  • Understand law surrounding STIs, confidentiality and partner notification issues
  • Gain an overview of the Governments Sexual Health Strategy
  • Implement prevention strategies surrounding sexually transmitted infections


Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)

Healthwise Training Services has made a commitment to deliver quality training. For our work on Alcohol and Drugs this has meant redesigning our training content and delivery systems to ensure that each course makes a positive and measurable contribution to the delivery of relevant DANOS units. All our programmes now include specified learning objectives linked to the appropriate DANOS units.

This course supports the attainment of the following DANOS Units:

AA3 Enable individuals to find out about and use services and facilities

AA4 Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights

AB1 Support individuals when they are distressed

AB2 Support individuals who are substance users

AC1 Develop your own knowledge and practice

AC3 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others

AD4 Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social wellbeing

This programme is aimed at anyone who wants to increase their knowledge and understanding of STIs. It requires no previous knowledge on behalf of the participant. It is particularly suitable for those who work with sexually active young people or adults, anyone working with sex workers, drug users or for workers from agencies offering free condoms and information/advice.

Also suitable for PSHCE co-ordinators, school nurses and staff involved in Sex and Relationships Education. This programme can also be delivered ditectly to service users - young people or adults. If your target group have specific needs please let us know and we can modify our programme accordingly.

This programme uses safe, non-threatening activities to meet our aims and objectives. The trainer will set ground rules for the day - special care is taken to explain confidentiality issues to participants - thereby ensuring a safe, relaxed and comfortable learning environment for participants.

All participants completing this course will receive a certificate of attendance and a portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.
