One Day Programme -

Understanding Stimulants


Aims

This programme aims to increase knowledge and to develop understanding of stimulant use in the UK, giving a better understanding of how stimulants can be used and the risks associated with the use of stimulants. Also to increase knowledge and develop understanding of the range of treatment services available and harm minimisation strategies

Learning Objectives


On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Explore prevalence of stimulant use and the historical background
  • Understand methods of using stimulants
  • Identify effects of stimulants and the paraphernalia associated with use
  • Understand risks associated with stimulant use
  • Develop intervention strategies for working with stimulant users and harm reduction techniques
  • Explore treatment options and the range of services available for stimulant users

This programme is aimed at anyone who wishes to develop their understanding of stimulants. - drug workers, specialist drug workers, support workers, voluntary, stautory or non-statutory staff or service users. It would be beneficial if those attending have already attended and completed a drug awareness training day or have a basic understanding of categories af drugs and effects and consequences of drug use. The programme utilises a variety of active learning methods to reach it's aims in a safe, non-threatening environment. Click on the link for more about our methodology.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion and a comprehensive portfolio of information for future reference or for sharing with colleagues.

Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)
This course supports the attainment of the following DANOS units:

AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists

AA2 Establish, sustain and disengage from relationships with individuals

AA4 Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights

AB1 Support individuals when they are distressed

AB2 Support individuals who are substance users

AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users

AC1 Develop your own knowledge and practice

AC3 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others

AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects

AD4 Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social wellbeing

AF2 Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise need

AG1 Plan and agree service responses which meet individuals identified needs and circumstances
