One Day Programme -

Supporting Children of Drug Using Parents

Aims

The course aims to increase knowledge and develop understanding of good practice procedures when working with the children of drug useing parents. It aims to give an overview of legislation as it affects child protection and will explore issues of the responsibilities of support agencies to the children of drug using parents

Learning Objectives

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Explore prevalence and patterns of drug use amongst parents
  • Identify developmental stages in terms of social, psychological and physical development
  • Understand the potential consequences of parental drug use and the impact on their children
  • Understand the child protection legislation and procedures including CAF
  • Develop effective strategies for responding to incidents of parental drug use
  • Implement good practice procedures when supporting the children of drug using parents

Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)

This course supports the attainment of the following DANOS units:

AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists

AA2: Establish, sustain and disengage from relationships with individuals

AA3: Enable individuals to find out about and use services and facilities

AA4: Enable individuals to find out about and use services and facilities

AA5: Interact with individuals using telecommunications

AB1: Support individuals when they are distressed

AB2: Support individuals who are substance users

AB5: Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users

AB7: Provide services to those affected by someone else’s substance use

AC1: Develop your own knowledge and practice

AC3: Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others

AC4: Support and challenge workers on specific aspects of their practice

AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects

AD4: Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social wellbeing

AF2: Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise need

AG1: Plan and agree service responses which meet individuals identified needs and circumstances

BA2: Provide information to support decision making

This course is aimed at anyone who works with children. It will be beneficial for those attending to have completed a drug awareness programme or to have a basic understanding of the different categories of drugs, their effects and consequences of use. However if your group does not have this basic knowledge please let us know and we can incorporate some work on this subject into the programme.

All participants completing this course will receive a certificate of attendance and a portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.
