Aims

This programme aims to increase participants knowledge and understanding of sexual health, sensitive issues such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV and methods of contraception. It further aims to look at the prevalence of the various STIs (including HIV/AIDS), biology, symptoms and treatments.

Learning objectives

On completion of the sexual health awareness programme participants will be able to:

• Explore statistical data relating to sexually transmitted infections and their prevalence in the UK

• Understand issues surrounding sexually transmitted infections, transmission routes, symptoms and treatments

• Identify methods of prevention of sexually transmitted infections

• Explore barriers faced by those accessing sexual health services and how to address this

• Understand pre and post-coital contraception methods, their efficacy and outcomes

• Identify national and local services available for further advice, guidance and support

This programme is aimed at anyone who wants to increase their awareness of sexual health issues. It demands no previous knowledge on behalf of the participants and will form a good basis and grounding in this area.

It is suitable for anyone who works with sexually active young people or adults, SRE or PSHCE staff, staff working in an advice or information setting, staff involved in free condom services or new staff in sexual health advice agencies.

It is also suitable for direct delivery to young people themselves.

All participants completing this course will receive a certificate of attendance and a comprehensive portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.
