One Day Programme -

Safer Disposal of Sharps

Aims

The programme aims to develop participants knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding blood borne viruses and the associated risks presented when disposing of discarded sharps.

It also aims to explore and introduce health and safety procedures for the effective collection and removal of discarded sharps.

Learning objectives

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Understand the blood borne viral infections associated with injecting drug use and therefore with discarded syringes
  • Understand health risks from blood borne viruses and bacteria posed by discarded sharps
  • Explore the purpose for health and safety procedures when responding to needle stick injuries
  • Demonstrate competence in safer disposal of discarded syringes using sharps' boxes and appropriate health and safety equipment

This programme is suitable for anyone who may come into contact with discarded syringes during their work. It is suitable for street cleaners, park wardens, ground staff, CSOs , police officers, council workers, those working in hostels, drop-in centre staff etc.

The programme is participative and non-threatening. It minimises and explains jargon and terminology. It gives staff an opportunity to become familiar with local policies, discuss their concerns and practice the safe retrieval of sharps. To optimise the learning it would be beneficial for us to use your own local policy. Ideal for staff induction.

If you don't have a local policy to deal with discarded sharps this programme provides the opportunity to discuss and collate suggestions and good practice. It can form the basis of a good practice policy that has been put together using ideas from the workforce most likely to encounter this problem in a day to day setting.

All participants completing this course will receive a certificate of attendance and a portfolio of information for future reference in a binder. Purchasers of this programme wil receive a Evaluation report and all original evaluation copy. See methodology for more information.
