Motivational Interviewing

 

Aims

This programme aims to introduce and explore the principles of motivational interviewing. It also aims to raise awareness of how motivational interviewing approaches can be used with drug and alcohol users to offer support and guidance, encouraging decision making about behaviour change

Learning Objectives

On completion of the programme participants will:

  • Understand the definition and general principles of motivational interviewing
  • Understand the different stages of the Prochaska and DiClemente ‘Cycle of Change’
  • Identify and understand effective tools and techniques to use when motivating change
  • Identify negative practice which hinders the process of change
  • View and demonstrate the practical use of Motivational Interviewing

This course is aimed at anyone who wishes to help their clients to change behaviour. As it can help clients to discuss and explore their ambivalence to any change in their lives it is suitable for any professional working with any client group of any age in any setting. Suitable for anyone working with clients in the drugs, alcohol or sexual health field.

It demands no previous expertise or knowledge from participants and will provide a basic understanding of Motivational Interviewing or act as a refresher.

Please let us know your specific circumstances and we will tailor this course to match your client group. This programme can also be delivered over two days which allows a more in-depth look at each step and provides time for practice of the techniques in pairs.

AI2: Help individuals address their substance use through an action plan
