Drug Treatments


Aims


The aims of this course are:

  • to identify current treatment options for both stimulant users and opiate users
  • to give an overview of detoxification methods and the various medications available for opiate and stimulant use
  • to explore the field of complementary therapy and how this can be used within the treatment programme for opiate or stimulant users
  • to provide an introduction to the treatment services available to opiate and stimulant users and
  • to explore the role of the criminal justice system in regards to drug treatment

Learning Objectives

On completion of the programme participants will be able to identify and understand:

  • the current treatment options available for both stimulant and opiate use
  • detoxification methods and the various medications used
  • the various complementary therapies available and the benefits of these to stimulant and opiate users
  • the services available within the community to which substance users can go for help
  • an overview of the criminal justice system and it's role within drug treatment

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to know more about the current treatment options available to drug users. Anyone working in the criminal justice, drug treatment, drug support or rehabilitation field, including statutory and non-statutory services, voluntary services and the service users.

It would be beneficial to have completed a drug awareness course or to have a basic understanding of the different types of drugs available with their different effects and why people choose to use drugs. if your target group need this information to be included in the day then please discuss this with us.

All participants completing this course will receive a certificate of attendance and a comprehensive portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.

Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)

This course supports the attainment of the following units:

AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists

AA2: Establish, sustain and disengage from relationships with individuals

AA3: Enable individuals to find out about and use services and facilities

AA4: Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights

AB2: Support individuals who are substance users

AB5: Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users

AC1: Develop your own knowledge and practice

AD4:Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social wellbeing

AF2: Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise need

AG1: Plan and agree service responses which meet individuals identified needs and circumstances

AI2: Help individuals address their substance use through an action plan
