Skills to Reduce Drug Related Death

 

'Skills to Reduce Drug Related Death' was successfully delivered around England to various user and carer support groups as part of the NTA's campaign to reduce overdose related deaths.

Aim

The programme aims to develop participant’s knowledge and understanding of the skills and information needed for individuals who support and care for drug users.

It aims to raise awareness in first aid and other prevention skills, which will help to reduce the risks of drug related deaths.

Learning objectives

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the life saving procedure to follow if a person has overdosed on drugs
  • Demonstrate the recovery position
  • Understand the importance of checking the airway and breathing of a person who has collapsed
  • Demonstrate how to give rescue breaths
  • Demonstrate chest compressions to keep the blood circulating
  • Explore and understand the causes and risks of drug related deaths
  • Explore myths and mistakes regarding overdose situations
  • Understand risks from blood borne viruses and explore how to reduce the risk of infection


This programme is aimed at anyone who is working with drug users in a professional, voluntary, statutory or non-statutory agency; at the family and friends of drug users including drug users themselves.

It demands no previous knowledge of the subject from it's participants and uses a variety of participative, non-threatening activities to meet its aim's. It is recommended that women attending this day's training wear trousers because of the content (putting a person in the recovery position etc).

All participants completing this Healthwise Training Services programme will receive a certificate of attendance and a portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.

Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)

Healthwise Training Services has made a commitment to deliver quality training. For our work on Alcohol and Drugs this has meant redesigning our training content and delivery systems to ensure that each course makes a positive and measurable contribution to the delivery of relevant DANOS units. All our programmes now include specified learning objectives linked to the appropriate DANOS units. This course supports the attainment of the following DANOS Units:

AB2 Support individuals who are substance users

AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users

AC1 Develop your own knowledge and practice

AC3 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others

AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
