Healthwise Training Services - One Day Programme -

Basic Drug Awareness


Aims

This programme aims to increase participant's knowledge and understanding of drug culture, the range of drugs and substances that can be misused, drug effects, the risks associated with drug misuse and the role of drugs within society.

Learning Objectives

On completion of the programme participants will:

  • Define 'substance use'
  • Explore their own and other's attitudes and myths
  • Understand why an individual may choose to use drugs
  • Identify the role of drug use within society
  • Explore legal implications
  • Understand the terminology used within the drug field
  • Understand the different categories of drugs and their effects
  • Explore the potential social, psychological and physical consequences of drug use

Who is this programme aimed at?

This Healthwise Training Services educational programme is aimed at anyone who wants to increase their knowledge and understanding of drugs including anyone new to working with drug users, community workers, community groups, youth workers, teachers, Connexions workers, YOT workers, voluntary workers etc.

It requires no previous knowledge on behalf of the participants, will serve as a refresher for those who do have a basic knowledge and aims to provide new information for anyone who attends. This programme is constantly updated and refreshed to maintain a current agenda. All participants completing this Healthwise Training Services programme will receive a certificate of attendance and a comprehensive portfolio of information for future reference in a binder.

Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)
This course supports the attainment of the following DANOS units:

AA1:Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists

AA3: Enable individuals to find out about and use services and facilities

AA4: Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights

AB1: Support individuals when they are distressed

AB2:Support individuals who are substance users

AB5:Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users

AC1:Develop your own knowledge and practice

AC3:Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others

AD1:Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects

AF2:Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise need
