Aims

The aims of this course are to increase knowledge and develop understanding of brief interventions and the methods used to encourage behavioural change and to provide an introduction into the theory and practice of assessment and intervention skills

Learning Objectives

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Explore the theoretical models offering explanations for why an individual chooses to use substances such as drugs and alcohol
  • Understand the process of dependence on alcohol/drugs
  • Understand the Prochaska & DiClemente (1986) 'Cycle of Change' model and its supporting theory
  • Explore the concepts of brief interventions and motivational interviewing with drug/alcohol users
  • Identify factors associated with supporting behaviour change
  • Identify potential barriers to change
  • Demonstrate how to implement these techniques into their own working practices with drug or alcohol users

Comments from previous participants on this programme:

  • "This course was excellent it has made my awareness on brief interventions 100% better. I think I will use all my info within the project. The clients we see are only short term, which is good for brief interventions"

What will you do differently as a result of this training?

  • "I will let the client talk more and not be too directive of outcomes. Enable them to be more reflective"
  • "Have more confidence in encouraging people to get help"
  • "Be more confident talking to clients about particular issues around hepatitis c and its treatment"

This programme is aimed at those who work with drug and/or alcohol users - anyone who has the opportunity to use a brief intervention to promote and encourage change in drug and/or alcohol use. It is suitable for those working in the community in a statutory, non-statutory or voluntary setting.

It would be beneficial if those attending already have a basic knowledge of drugs, alcohol effects and consequences.

If you would like these adding to the aims and objectives of the day then please contact us to discuss your requirements.
